Risk factors include a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Key Tests
Prof Dr Mohsin Wali, Senior Consultant and Director of Internal Medicine at Pacific OneHealth Hospital in New Delhi, points out that high blood pressure can grow without any clear symptoms. Regular and simple blood pressure checks help spot this issue early. High cholesterol also develops quietly as an abnormal lipid profile, particularly high LDL cholesterol, builds up plaque in the arteries over time. A standard lipid profile measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Blood sugar tests like fasting blood glucose or HbA1c are also important because metabolic and cardiovascular health are closely connected, and high blood sugar can damage blood vessels.
Screening Approach
There is no single age when everyone needs the exact same cardiac screening package. A healthy 30-year-old with no risk factors requires a different approach than a 35-year-old dealing with hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and a family history of early heart disease. Prevention should start long before a person turns 50.
Context
Routine health packages often bundle cardiac tests for older adults, but doctors increasingly recommend looking at personal risk profiles at younger ages. Preventive screening gives individuals a chance to change lifestyle factors or manage conditions before serious complications arise.
