The Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, have signed a five-year agreement to boost academic and research cooperation between the two institutions.

Partnership Details

The memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday at the IIT Madras campus by V. Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani, and V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. Other officials present at the signing included Arya Kumar, Institute-wide Dean of Alumni Relations; Sounak Roy, Institute-wide Dean of Research and Innovation; and Raj Kumar Gupta, Professor in the Department of Physics at the BITS Pilani campus. According to a press statement issued by IIT Madras, the partnership aims to create opportunities for the exchange of students and faculty, scholarly information, materials, and publications, alongside the joint organisation of seminars, workshops, and other academic meetings.

Exchange Programme

A key component of the collaboration is a student exchange programme allowing students from both institutes to join academic coursework, research activities, and project work at the partner institution. Participating students will be designated as special exchange students and can enrol in courses for credit or audit, subject to the approval of relevant faculty or project supervisors and the fulfilment of applicable prerequisites. The programme includes tuition-fee waivers at the host institution, and credits and grades earned will be recognised by the home institution based on academic reports from the host.

Context

Institutional partnerships between top-tier Indian engineering schools allow students and researchers to share advanced laboratory infrastructure and academic expertise. Such agreements help foster greater collaboration across different campuses within the country's higher education system.
