The Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani have signed a five-year agreement to boost academic and research cooperation.
Partnership Details
Signed on Tuesday at the IIT Madras campus by BITS Pilani Group Vice Chancellor Ramgopal Rao and IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti, the memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for shared academic interests. Officials including Arya Kumar, Sounak Roy, and Raj Kumar Gupta were present at the signing. The pact enables the exchange of students, faculty, scholarly materials, and publications, alongside hosting joint seminars and workshops.
Student Exchange Programme
A key focus of the partnership is the student exchange scheme, allowing learners from both campuses to undertake coursework, research, and project work at the partner institute. Participating learners will be named special exchange students, with options to enrol for credits or audits subject to faculty approval and prerequisites. The host institution will waive tuition fees for visiting students, and home institutions will formally recognise credits and grades earned based on host academic reports.
Leadership Views
Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao stated that BITS Pilani aims to give students and faculty access to top academic ecosystems, noting the tie-up will foster joint research and student mobility. Prof. V. Kamakoti expressed happiness over signing the MoU, highlighting plans to work together on areas from emerging technologies to wellness initiatives.
Context
Academic collaborations between premier Indian institutions help pool resources and bridge traditional institutional boundaries. Such partnerships typically allow students to gain exposure to different learning environments and specialized research facilities without extending their degree duration.
