Representative image · PexelsAditya Dhar's hit film Dhurandhar The Revenge is set to air on television on Sunday, October 18 at 7:00 pm on Star Gold, but its runtime has been cut by ten minutes to secure a TV-friendly rating. The Central Board of Film Certification has recertified the film as 'UA 16+' after the makers submitted it for modifications.
Cuts and Runtime
According to the CBFC website, the newly revised version has a runtime of 3 hours, 39 minutes and 6 seconds, down from its original theatrical duration of 3 hours, 49 minutes and 6 seconds. Bollywood Hungama reported that the makers were asked to make 45 to 50 cuts, with almost all changes targeting extremely violent and gory scenes. A trade source noted that these disturbing scenes were edited out smoothly to keep the impact of the film intact.
Box Office Record
The Ranveer Singh-starrer originally released in cinemas in March with an 'A' certificate, during which the censor board asked the makers to chop out 94 seconds of footage and mute a few abusive words. Despite criticism for its violent content, the movie became one of the biggest Hindi hits of all time. Trade tracker Sacnilk figures show it earned Rs 1,813 crore worldwide, making it second only to Aamir Khan's Dangal. The film collected Rs 1,149 crore net in India and Rs 438 crore overseas, though it did not release in several Middle Eastern countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain.
Context
Television broadcasts in India require films with mature or adult theatrical ratings to undergo edits and secure family-friendly certifications before they can air on channels. Broadcasters often trim violent or sensitive sequences to comply with broadcasting guidelines set for general audiences and younger viewers. Recertification processes are standard procedure for major cinematic releases transitioning from the big screen to home television networks.
