Statement From Chief Mufti

Uttar Pradesh Chief Mufti Maulana Chaudhary Ifrahim Hussain has reacted to a fatwa issued against film actor Sara Ali Khan for visiting the Kedarnath temple and offering prayers.

Need To Verify Intent

Maulana Chaudhary Ifrahim Hussain stated that if Sara Ali Khan actually performed idol worship where she associated others with Allah, Islamic beliefs would consider it a sin, making Maulana Shahabuddin Rizvi's fatwa consistent with Islamic law. However, he emphasized that intent and real actions matter.

Action Versus Intention

According to the Chief Mufti, if the actor did not hold such religious beliefs and merely visited the temple to see a cultural or tourist site without praying to other deities, calling her a sinner is not justified. He noted that one must understand personal intention, spoken word, and actual deed before reaching a final conclusion on her religious conduct.

Context

Religious decrees and public figures often draw sharp debates when personal faith intersects with traditional clerical interpretations. Clerics regularly issue opinions based on specific questions from followers, though these carry religious weight rather than legal force. Understanding the exact context of a public figure's actions remains a central point of discussion among religious scholars.
