Fiscal Progress

India has raised ₹62,124 crore through disinvestment and asset monetisation between April and September 2026, putting the government on track to exceed its full-year budget goal. Out of this total amount, ₹55,757 crore came directly from disinvestment alone. These collections reached 78 percent of the annual budget target of ₹80,000 crore even before the government approved the sale of its share in IDBI Bank on October 14. This progress helps the administration manage a fiscal year marked by global uncertainty, high energy prices, and concerns over a weak monsoon.

Revenue Pressures

The strong push to sell government stakes comes as officials try to balance rising expenses against slower income growth. Between April and August 2026, net tax revenue increased by a modest 3.4 percent, while non-tax revenue grew by 3.2 percent. At the same time, capital spending went up by more than 18 percent. Because of this gap, the fiscal deficit has already touched 42 percent of the budgeted levels. For investors and industry leaders, these asset sales show that the government remains committed to economic reforms and giving the private sector a bigger role.

Context

Disinvestment involves the government selling parts of its ownership in public sector enterprises to raise funds and improve business efficiency. These funds help the state bridge gaps when routine tax collections grow slower than public spending commitments. Asset sales are a common tool used by governments to manage national debt and support infrastructure projects without raising taxes.
