Two upcoming family weddings are putting family ties and political loyalties to the test for the relatives of the late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekara Reddy, known as YSR.

The Dispute

At the centre of the friction are former Andhra CM and YSRCP president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and his sister, APCC president Y S Sharmila. The siblings have been estranged for years, with Sharmila previously stating she lacked political space in the YSRCP and accusing her brother of denying her a proper share in the family properties. Their latest conflict flared up when Sharmila asked Jagan for permission to use the Yelahanka Palace, the family's Bengaluru house complex, to host the November 25 wedding reception for her daughter Anjili, who is engaged to an NRI named S Ragurami Reddy.

Security Concerns

Jagan wrote back to say he objected to using the palace for the reception, pointing to security and privacy issues. Family sources noted that Jagan's wife Bharati and their daughter live at the Bengaluru property, and their second daughter is soon returning from studies abroad. Jagan felt worried about safety with outside agencies involved when he is not present, and the wider family sided with him. The correspondence soon leaked to the media, making relations in the YSR clan even worse, though their mother Y S Vijayalakshmi has tried to push for a compromise.

Chennai Wedding

Meanwhile, another family wedding is taking place in Chennai between November 3 and 6 for the daughter of Y S Anil Reddy, a cousin of Jagan and Sharmila. Anil Reddy is the son of YSR's brother Y S George Reddy and a founding member of the YSRCP with business interests in Africa. Extended family members, including cousins, aunts, and uncles, are travelling to Chennai without meeting Sharmila, reportedly leaving her sidelined. This Chennai event is expected to draw major figures, and Sharmila and her husband M Anil Kumar have invited leaders like Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy, Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and Karnataka CM D K Shivakumar, though some family members may skip it.

Context

Political families in India often face public splits when sibling rivalries mix with party politics and property disagreements. The YSR family holds deep roots in Andhra Pradesh politics, making any personal friction between its prominent members a matter of intense public and media attention. Sharmila and Jagan are both key political players leading different parties in the region, which adds extra strain to their personal disagreements.
