S. Sadanandam, popularly known as Sada 'Master', the lead guitarist in Ilaiyaraaja’s troupe and a pioneer of Malayalam film music, died on Thursday, Oct 29, 2026. He was senior to Ilaiyaraaja in the South Indian film industry and one of the most sought‑after guitarists in the 1970s Malayalam scene. Music director and lyricist Gangai Amaran, Ilaiyaraaja’s younger brother, said Sada introduced both brothers to Malayalam cinema. Sada, son of AVM Studios music director Sudarsanam 'Master', worked on the film Yaarukkaga Azhuthan directed by writer Jayakanthan, whose music was by S.V. Ramanan, grandfather of composer Anirudh. He also played for composers M.S. Viswanathan, G.K. Venkatesh and Salil Chowdhury. Guitar phrases by Sada and fellow guitarist Philips can be heard in the song Velli Kinnam Than Thanga Kaigalil from the film Uyarntha Manithan. In the late 1960s Amaran recalled walking past Sada’s house, hearing music, and later being invited inside to play together. Sada’s troupe included Abaswaram Ramjhi and Radha Vijayan, son of actor M.K. Radha. He frequently recommended Ilaiyaraaja and Amaran as substitutes for Malayalam music directors, helping them secure many recording jobs. Conductor Sekar, father of A.R. Rahman, led many of those sessions. When Ilaiyaraaja became music director of Annakili in 1976, Sada joined him permanently as lead guitarist, while Amaran handled rhythm guitar. Later Sada taught guitar to dozens of students who now perform worldwide. His prelude to Intha Maan Unthan Sontha Maan, with lyrics by Amaran, is praised as a top guitar piece. Ten days before his death he was recovering from heart surgery and received a visit from a Danish friend. Amaran expressed deep grief, listing other recent losses among film friends.
Context
Guitars became a staple of South Indian film scores in the 1960s, adding melodic texture to songs. Malayalam cinema relied on versatile session musicians like Sada to bridge classical and modern sounds. His teaching legacy continues the tradition by spreading South Indian guitar styles globally.
