BRS legislators claim Telangana chief minister A. Revanth Reddy let about 1,000 tmc ft of Godavari water run downstream to Andhra Pradesh despite the chance to draw it from Medigadda Barrage and operate the Kannepally pump‑house. On Friday, roughly 13,000 cusecs surged out of the Medigadda Barrage, a flow the opposition says the state ignored while El Nino conditions worsened. The two MLAs, Padi Kaushik Reddy and Kalvakuntla Sanjay, said the chief minister’s confidence in using Kaleshwaram pump‑houses was driven by a desire to boost former chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s image, not to safeguard farmers. They pointed out that the government’s inaction forced officials to announce a crop‑holiday for the Rabi season and questioned why Hyderabad residents face penalties for water‑wasting activities while the chief minister is not held accountable. The legislators demanded a compensation of ₹50,000 per acre for crops that failed due to lack of irrigation and urged the administration to start lifting water from Kannepally immediately, even if only through temporary measures until a cofferdam is built upstream of Medigadda.
Context
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over inter‑state water sharing in the Godavari basin, especially during drought‑prone periods when water availability directly impacts agricultural planning and farmer livelihoods.
