Cultural leaders and youth joined forces in Thrissur on Friday for a solidarity march supporting ongoing demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against alleged denials of voting rights and citizenship. Organised by the Democratic Secular Collective at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi's Basheer venue, the 'Raise the Flag of Freedom' event featured a symbolic handover of the National Flag and a copy of the Constitution to a group of student representatives.
The Gathering
Prominent writers, activists, and artists participated in the Friday programme, including K. Satchidanandan, Sarah Joseph, K.G. Sankara Pillai, Kalpetta Narayanan, K.V. Ramakrishnan, Ravunni, Ashokan Charuvil, filmmaker Priyanandanan, and actor Rima Kallingal. Poet K. Satchidanandan opened the meeting by reciting his poem Nadakku, Nadakku and noted that passing the flag represented transferring responsibility to youth. Student leaders Sanoop Dev, Neelanjana, Ayesha, and Mohammed Shahab received the symbols on behalf of younger protesters.
Speeches and Art
Speakers at the gathering criticised current political trends and praised the active role of young citizens. K.G. Sankara Pillai recited verse about facing fascism, while Sarah Joseph described raising the national banner as an act of reclaiming democracy. Sahitya Akademi President Kalpetta Narayanan alleged that a process of filtering citizens was occurring under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Actor Rima Kallingal stated that youth had successfully awakened the older generation through their protests. The event followed a solidarity rally that started near CMS School and ended at the Sahitya Akademi, featuring evening resistance art like hip-hop, folk music, and performances by the band Oorali.
Context
Public gatherings and solidarity marches organized by writers and artists have a long history in Kerala as a platform for expressing political dissent. Such events bring together older literary figures and student groups to debate governance, rights, and secularism.
