Sugarcane growers across Karnataka have announced a state-wide shutdown for Saturday after local authorities barred their traffic blockade on a major national highway. The Belagavi district administration issued an order on Friday to stop the planned road protest along the Pune-Bengaluru route. Farmers leader Chunappa Pujeri stated that the union will follow the official directive and avoid blocking the key transit route. Growers will instead push forward with the protest across every district in the state. Fellow leader Chukki Nanjundaswami will lead the shutdown efforts in the southern districts while other groups manage local areas. Protesters will also launch a mass arrest demonstration on Sunday.

Context

State-wide shutdowns and mass arrest protests are common tactics used by farmer unions in India to pressure authorities into accepting demands related to crop prices and agricultural policies. When local officials ban direct blockades on vital highways to maintain public order, protest groups often pivot to broader shutdowns or civil disobedience actions to keep up political pressure.
