UPDATE - follow-up to Andhra Pradesh SEC gears up for polls in 100 Urban Local Bodies on November 1: Authorities have finalized preparations for elections across 100 Urban Local Bodies, consisting of 13 Municipal Corporations and 87 Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats, scheduled for November 1.
Security and Setup
A massive force of 36,351 police personnel is deployed for the polls, managed by 34 Superintendents of Police and 52 Additional Superintendents of Police. Drones and CCTV cameras are set up at sensitive polling centres to prevent clashes between rival supporters. More than 400 flying squads are active to enforce the Model Code of Conduct. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha held a video conference with District Collectors, Director of Municipal Administration P. Sampath Kumar, APSEC Secretary A. Mallikarjuna, and Inspector General of Police B. Raja Kumari to review safety measures.
Election Schedule
Voting was originally set for October 28 but was delayed by the Supreme Court after violent incidents stopped some candidates from filing nominations. Seventeen candidates already won unanimously as municipal chairpersons, including 15 from the TDP, one from the Jana Sena Party, and one from the BJP. Mayoral posts for Greater Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada went to the TDP and Jana Sena Party through seat adjustments. Repolling can take place on November 2 if needed, and vote counting happens on November 3. Separately, ZPTC and MPTC elections now take place on November 5.
Context
Local body elections in India are regularly rescheduled or heavily secured when political tensions rise during the nomination and campaigning phases. The State Election Commission maintains central control rooms to monitor complaints and ensure fair play during local polls.
