Actor Janhvi Kapoor recently stated during an appearance on Koffee With Karan that she carries deep regret regarding the way her character was presented in the Ram Charan-starrer film Peddi. She admitted that she should have been more vigilant, questioned creative decisions, and used her privilege to assert herself when she felt uncomfortable.
Making the Movie
The controversy centres on how her character was filmed, including repeated camera focus on her waist, navel, and cleavage, rather than on the actor wearing revealing clothes or performing a sensual song. Janhvi noted that she did not conceptualise camera angles, direct scenes, or control the editing process, as those are collective duties handled by the director, cinematographer, choreographer, producers, and editors. She also explained that scripts in the industry do not always specify camera angles beforehand, meaning actors may not know how a scene will be framed until filming begins.
Director's Response
Following heavy public criticism and backlash from viewers, director Buchi Babu Sana issued an apology and stated that changes would be made to the disputed portions of the film. The makers maintained they had no intention to objectify or disrespect the female character. However, public responses have raised questions about whether the makers would have altered these creative choices if viewers had not spoken out first.
Context
Film sets often involve complex power dynamics where actors face pressure to remain professional and obey the director without raising objections. This situation highlights ongoing discussions within the entertainment industry regarding consent, creative collaboration, and the shared responsibility of filmmakers when handling sensitive visual treatments of actors on screen.
