Telangana government has widened the instant pension scheme to allow widows of pensioner husbands from several new social security groups to receive payments immediately after their spouse’s death. The move adds families of persons with disabilities, toddy tappers, handloom weavers, dialysis patients and people affected by HIV and filariasis to the beneficiary list. Earlier the benefit applied only to wives of deceased old‑age pensioners. The Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department issued revised guidelines that set age thresholds: women younger than 57 qualify for a widow pension, while those 57 or older receive an old‑age pension. Rural applicants must file their forms with the local Panchayat Secretary; urban applicants go to the Bill Collector. Required papers include the wife’s Aadhaar card, the first page of her bank passbook, the deceased husband’s Aadhaar card and his death certificate. Officials check the documents and upload the data on the Cheyutha portal. After verification, pensions are sanctioned. The government said the change aims to give financial security to women who lose their spouses and to keep social‑security support to their families uninterrupted.
Context
Instant pension schemes are part of Telangana’s broader effort to strengthen social security for vulnerable groups. The Cheyutha portal is the state’s online system for managing pension disbursements.
