Actress Anupama Parameswaran posted an Instagram story to point out how identical behaviour is judged differently depending on who does it. She said actions once labelled as shameful are now accepted when the opposite gender repeats them. She gave simple examples such as smiling openly, thanking supporters and enjoying small moments, which often draw unwanted criticism. She argued the bias concerns who is permitted to act, not the act itself. She reminded followers that she has been active on the platform for years, not a recent habit. She pledged to keep engaging with fans honestly and at a sustainable pace, but not if it harms her mental peace. She rejected the idea that love and gratitude must be shown constantly online to be genuine. She noted that life away from screens carries its own duties and challenges, which she also faces. She observed that many people form opinions solely from social‑media snapshots without knowing a person’s real circumstances. She closed with a comment that rules shift when positions are swapped. The actress is known for Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil movies including Premam (2015), A Aa (2016) and Kodi (2016). Earlier this year she told SCREEN magazine about the emotional and physical toll of a past relationship. Her most recent film, Crazy Kalyanam, opened on 16 October.
Context
Public figures in India often encounter gender‑based double standards on social platforms, where the same behaviour is praised for men but critiqued for women. Social media amplifies personal scrutiny, making it harder for celebrities to maintain mental well‑being while staying connected with fans.
