Pony Varma opens up about actor Prakash Raj joining recent student protests

Protests And Police Action

Actor Prakash Raj joined student demonstrations in Bengaluru and the national capital during June and July alongside the Cockroach Janata Party. His participation included the Chalo Sansad march toward Parliament. Choreographer Pony Varma, who is married to the actor, shared her anxiety upon watching television footage of police baton charges and pellet use at the demonstration sites. She requested that her husband sleep at a hotel rather than outdoors with the crowd, but he refused the suggestion.

Reasons And Demands

The agitations emerged following reported paper leaks and unfair practices during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test examinations. Student unions and political bodies pressed for the resignation of the Union Education Minister at the time, Dharmendra Pradhan. During June, the actor gathered with protesters at Freedom Park located in Bengaluru. By July, he traveled to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi alongside activist Sonam Wangchuk, later joining actor Shabana Azmi for the march toward Parliament. Police officials stated that organizers failed to obtain prior approval for the rally, while official court filings maintained that personnel employed the minimum necessary force.

Context

Public demonstrations involving film personalities often draw widespread attention to student-led political movements in urban centers. Police forces frequently face difficult crowd-control situations when large groups assemble near government buildings without prior official clearance. High-profile figures participating in grassroots campaigns typically aim to amplify youth concerns through their public standing.
