UPDATE - follow-up to Andhra civic polls: TDP, YSRCP workers clash in Pulivendula; 22.08% turnout by 11 a.m. | LIVE: Voting is underway across Andhra Pradesh for urban local body elections on Sunday, November 1, 2026, with the overall voter turnout reaching 22.08% by 11 a.m. Workers of the ruling Telugu Desam Party and the YSR Congress Party clashed in Pulivendula, which is the home constituency of YSRCP chief and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Stones were thrown in some wards before police brought the situation under control. Fourteen vehicles, including three cars, ten motorcycles and a tractor, were set on fire near an orchard belonging to Madhusudhan Reddy just hours before polling began around midnight.

Turnout Trends

Smaller towns are recording much faster voting speeds than big cities across the state. Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district recorded the highest turnout at 60.92%, followed by Kuppam at 44.30% and Nagari at 40.46%. In Pulivendula, turnout stood at 35.17%, while Kadapa district overall reached 25.46%. Meanwhile, major municipal corporations are trailing behind, with Visakhapatnam registering the lowest at 13.34%, Vijayawada at 18.07%, and Guntur at 17.82%. Voting began at 7 a.m. and will conclude at 5 p.m., with vote counting scheduled for November 3. Eight municipalities and nagar panchayats are not voting because their chairpersons and ward members were elected unopposed after earlier polls were delayed by Supreme Court directions.

Political Reactions

Minister Nara Lokesh stated on X that the YSRCP seemed well-prepared for trouble in Kadapa while the rest of the state voted peacefully, adding that authorities would deal with criminal elements. In contrast, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the State Election Commission of failing to provide a level playing field and favoring the ruling NDA government. He claimed journalists were beaten up, cameras were destroyed, and polling agents were blocked from stations. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy arrived in Pulivendula by helicopter on Sunday morning and took out a roadshow, which the TDP accused as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Separately, Shaik Dastagiri, an approver in the Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy murder case, confronted Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy's convoy on a busy road, creating further tension.

Context

Urban local body elections decide the political control of municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats, which manage civic infrastructure and local public services in towns and cities. These polls often witness intense political rivalry between major state parties at the grassroots level. The State Election Commission oversees the entire polling process to ensure adherence to election rules and security protocols.
