Reliance Industries shares jumped nearly six percent in Monday's trading session after the company posted strong financial results for the July-September quarter of fiscal year 2027. The stock opened at 1,228.10 rupees each on the National Stock Exchange, compared to the previous close of 1,164.90 rupees last week on Friday, and reached a high of 1,237.30 rupees on November 2.

Financial Growth

The company reported a 33.8 percent year-on-year growth in consolidated profit after tax at 29,550 crore rupees for the second quarter, up from 22,092 crore rupees in the same period last year. Net profit for shareholders increased 40 percent to 25,548 crore rupees. Consolidated revenue rose 27.8 percent to 3,62,268 crore rupees, while core earnings increased 23.9 percent to a record 62,409 crore rupees.

Segment Performance

The oil-to-chemicals division drove the earnings growth, aided by stronger global transportation fuel cracks and better petrochemical margins. Segment earnings surged 67.9 percent to 25,203 crore rupees, and revenue grew 44.2 percent to 2,31,601 crore rupees. Global supply issues from the West Asia conflict and attacks on refining infrastructure helped push fuel cracks to three to 3.7 times their levels from a year ago, while the average price of Dated Brent crude reached 97 dollars per barrel.

Context

Stock prices often react strongly to quarterly earnings reports when a major corporation beats profit expectations or reports record numbers. Reliance Industries is India's largest listed company by market capitalisation, with business operations spanning oil, retail, and telecommunications.
