Oscar-winning actor Tilda Swinton will release her first book in the fall of 2028, a memoir titled "Material Evidence". The publishing house Farrar, Straus and Giroux shared the announcement on Instagram.

The Format

Instead of a standard timeline from childhood to the present, the book uses an unusual structure based on how memory works. It moves forward object by object, featuring items like a letter, a sweatshirt, a christening dress, a photograph, a wooden leg, and a piece of embroidery silk. Swinton described the work as a trail of breadcrumbs and an essay in wonder about curiosity. The 65-year-old actor hopes readers will finish the book feeling energized to appreciate the difference between the changing spirit within each person and the solid matter of the world around us. FSG president and publisher Mitzi Angel, who will edit the book, praised Swinton's distinct perspective.

Career History

Swinton started her acting career in the 1980s by working with British director Derek Jarman on projects such as "Caravaggio", "The Garden", and "The Last of England". She gained broader fame playing Isabella of France in "Edward II" and took the lead role in Sally Potter's "Orlando". She later won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying a tough corporate lawyer in "Michael Clayton". Her filmography spans both independent movies and large studio projects, including "Suspiria", "We Need to Talk About Kevin", Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "Isle of Dogs", and "Asteroid City", alongside major roles in the "Narnia" series and Marvel's "Doctor Strange" and "Avengers: Endgame".

Context

Actors writing memoirs often provide personal insights into the film industry and their creative processes. Publishing houses like Farrar, Straus and Giroux frequently partner with notable artists to release autobiographical works that appeal to both film fans and general readers. Biographies and memoirs structured around physical items offer a sensory approach to storytelling that departs from traditional chronological setups.
