UPDATE - follow-up to Andhra Pradesh civic polls result LIVE | Counting of votes underway across 92 ULBs; Counting delayed at several places, SEC Monitoring field reports: Vote counting is underway for 92 urban local bodies across Andhra Pradesh, covering 3,186 wards across 13 Municipal Corporations and 79 Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats. Early trends show parties taking leads as authorities manage delays caused by rain, missing keys, and security measures.

Early Leads And Key Races

The early trends show parties taking leads in different regions. The TDP is ahead in the Chittoor region after securing several seats unanimously, and is also leading across Chittoor, Annamayya, and Sri Sathya Sai districts. In Punganur, 32 of 36 wards were decided unanimously, with the TDP winning 27, the Jana Sena Party and the BJP winning two each, and one independent winning with NDA support. In Rayachoti, all 44 wards and the chairperson post were decided unanimously, and Nagari's chairperson was also elected unanimously. In Pithapuram, the constituency of Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, the Jana Sena Party leads in five of the first nine wards counted, with independents leading in three and the TDP in one. In Pulivendula, Y.S. Prameelamma, aunt of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSRCP candidate, leads against NDA rival T. Geetha Kumari. In Nellimarla, TDP rebel candidate L. Appala Naidu took an early lead through postal ballots with 57 votes, ahead of the YSRCP with 28 and the BJP with 17.

Delays And Disruptions

Counting faced several interruptions across the state on Tuesday. Heavy rain from Cyclone Murasu delayed counting in Bapatla and Prakasam districts from 8 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. In Parvathipuram, counting was delayed by about two hours after the strong room keys went missing, forcing officials to break open the locks at around 10 a.m. with the consent of all political parties. The State Election Commission has suspended two polling officers for misplacing those keys. The Pulivendula counting also started after a slight delay following earlier violence and clashes during the November 1 polling, which led the YSRCP to approach the High Court for a repoll before the court directed authorities to proceed.

Arrangements And Turnout

State authorities set up 138 counting centres across the 92 urban local bodies, including 22 centres for Municipal Corporations. A total of 47,817 personnel have been deployed for the counting process, supported by 1,372 CCTV cameras installed at strong rooms and counting centres. The urban local body polls took place on November 1, recording a final voter turnout of 62.16% as 60,22,411 people voted out of 96,89,061 registered voters.

Context

Local body elections in India are conducted by State Election Commissions to manage civic administration in urban and rural areas. Unanimous wins often occur in local polls when political consensus or local dominance results in single candidates running unopposed in specific wards.
