Actor Bhavana Balsavar has recalled how the cast of the 1990s sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh remained completely protected from the financial difficulties faced by Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited. The production venture, founded by Amitabh Bachchan, ran into serious money troubles in the late 1990s after losses from ventures like film production and the 1996 Miss World pageant. Jaya Bachchan served as the producer for the popular show, which premiered on DD Metro in May 1993 and was produced alongside Saraswati Audio Visuals.

Professionalism On Set

Bhavana, who played Sunita Deewan in the hit series, praised the unmatched professionalism of Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan during a recent conversation with interviewer Siddharth Kannan. She noted that the makers never compromised on the grand sets or technical arrangements despite the background troubles. The lavish standing set featured a multi-camera setup with two floors, staircases, and multiple rooms. According to the actor, the producers never let the financial stress reflect on their faces or in their behaviour toward the artists, ensuring the work environment remained entirely normal.

Cast Protection

While the cast occasionally heard about the ongoing money problems, Jaya Bachchan never allowed those worries to affect the artists or the quality of the show. Bhavana explained that the producers did not divert the earnings from the serial to pay off other debts, choosing instead to reinvest the incoming funds directly into the production. She also credited director and creator Aanand Mahendroo for acting as a strong support system through the project, noting that her own contract was through him rather than directly with ABCL.

Context

Financial challenges in entertainment ventures during the late 1990s often stemmed from high-risk expansions into event management and large-scale film production. Despite such corporate setbacks, long-running television productions during that era frequently relied on dedicated creative teams and steady broadcast revenues to maintain quality on screen.
