Reported by Faizan Khan (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Action Taken
The Bengaluru South City Corporation has sealed 63 commercial establishments operating illegally in residential areas during a special enforcement drive. The highest number of closures took place in the BTM Layout Assembly constituency, where 30 shops were shut down. Officials also shut 10 shops in the Bengaluru South constituency, nine in Bommanahalli, eight in Padmanabhanagar, four in Jayanagar, and two within the limits of the Anekal Assembly constituency.
Rules and Affected Businesses
The targeted businesses included bakeries, eateries, condiment stores, salons, beauty parlours, fruit and vegetable outlets, and hardware stores. According to Corporation officials, commercial establishments on roads narrower than 40 feet in residential areas are not allowed. These shops continued operating without valid trade licences even after receiving notices and instructions to vacate, while also causing inconvenience to residents and blocking traffic. Commissioner K.N. Ramesh warned of strict legal action against shops operating illegally or without required licences. The drive covered several wards including Kumaraswamy Layout, J.P. Nagar, Madiwala, Koramangala, Ejipura, Jakkasandra, Begur, Singasandra, Yelachenahalli, Uttarahalli, Gottigere, Bilekahalli, and Arakere.
Context
Municipal corporations in major Indian cities regularly crack down on commercial activities in residential zones to manage traffic congestion and protect the living environment of residents. Operating businesses without proper licences or in prohibited residential lanes violates local urban planning rules.
