Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
UPDATE - follow-up to District-level advisory committees to be formed in Tamil Nadu to address sales taxpayers' grievances: New district advisory panels led by District Collectors will now tackle sales tax problems across Tamil Nadu. These groups will meet every three months to talk about tax troubles and fix them. Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration D. Logesh Tamilselvan led a recent meeting where authorities made this choice.
Committee Members
The panels include several officials and local representatives. Members count the Joint Commissioner for State Tax, a non-headquarters Deputy Commissioner for State Tax, the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence, and local members from the State-level Sales Tax Advisory Committee. Other officials are the Superintendent or Assistant Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner for Central Tax, and the general manager of the District Industries Centre.
Additional Members And Deadlines
Ex-officio members feature one local Member of the Legislative Assembly, two people each from farming, industry, and wholesale and retail trading groups, plus one person each from cooperative bodies, cottage industries, and consumer forums. The Deputy Commissioner for State Tax based at each district headquarters will work as the committee secretary. Joint Commissioners of State Tax must set up these committees by November 30. These groups will stay active until November 30, 2029. The Minister also ordered the first meetings to happen by December 15.
Context
Tax advisory committees help bridge the gap between business owners and tax authorities at the local level. Such government panels give taxpayers a direct way to voice concerns without having to approach higher state courts or main offices.
