Local media reports indicate she worked for the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute and likely caught pneumonic plague through a broken test tube. Context
The plague is an infectious bacterial disease, and the pneumonic form spreads easily and can quickly turn fatal without early medical treatment according to the World Health Organization. While health authorities work to contain potential exposure, laboratory accidents involving infectious samples remain a rare but serious occupational risk in specialized research facilities.
