Uttar Pradesh to cross‑check assembly rolls with local body lists, targeting one crore missing voters
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Uttar Pradesh’s chief electoral officer has ordered a state‑wide cross‑check of assembly voter lists with panchayat and urban body rolls to locate missing eligible voters. The move comes as part of the Special Summary Revision of Voter Lists for 2027. Guidelines have been sent to every District Election Officer, instructing them to carry out the matching in detail. Electoral Registration Officers must complete Form 6 for each identified citizen who is not on any assembly constituency list. District officers have also been asked to use the food department’s fair‑price shops to find adults aged 18 or older who are registered there but absent from the current rolls. Those found eligible will be added to the voter list. The effort is coordinated with multiple departments to enroll more youth and women. In schools and colleges, Electoral Literacy Clubs are being activated, and the assistant electoral registration officer of each constituency must work with club coordinators in “mission mode”. Youth groups such as the National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Yuvak Mangal Dal and Bharat Scouts and Guides will assist. Officials estimate that about one crore voters could be added to the post‑revision rolls based on the state’s population data. The final revised rolls are slated for publication on 4 January, ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for early next year.
Context
The cross‑checking aims to ensure that all eligible adults, especially those in rural and urban low‑income areas, are captured in the electoral roll, reducing the chance of disenfranchisement in the upcoming polls.
