UPDATE - follow-up to At INDIA march against Election Commission, a Rahul Gandhi move stumped cops: Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra walked into the Akashvani Bhavan premises after police detained opposition MPs during a protest against the Election Commission on Tuesday. The protest march by the INDIA bloc had been stopped by police, and leaders were being pushed into buses when the siblings walked past security personnel and entered the building, catching police and party colleagues by surprise.

Protest Actions

Congress leaders KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera, Imran Pratapgarhi, and Srinivas BV climbed the boundary wall of Akashvani Bhavan and raised slogans after the Gandhis went inside. Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel were stationed outside the building, while top security officers spoke with the leaders still camping on the premises. A police officer stated that forces were placed inside to ensure the safety of the leaders.

Demands And BJP Reaction

The opposition is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of disenfranchising voters through the Special Intensive Revision exercise to benefit the BJP. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien were among those detained earlier. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the protest to protect voting rights and democracy will continue. In response, the BJP accused the opposition of trying to create anarchy and relaunch Rahul Gandhi. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan questioned why opposition wins in states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh were not called illegitimate, while party spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed the opposition was undermining constitutional institutions.

Context

This demonstration highlights the ongoing political tensions between opposition parties and election authorities over voting processes in India. Major political protests of this nature frequently involve heavy police deployment and detentions in the national capital.
