UPDATE - follow-up to What is 'ferritin face' and why is this health scare trending on social media?: Terms like 'iron-deficiency face' and 'ferritin face' circulating on social media are not recognised medical diagnoses, and low ferritin does not produce a distinct facial appearance.

Expert Insights

Ramya Subburaj, senior clinical dietitian and head of the department of dietetics at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Vanagaram, Chennai, noted that physical signs should be viewed as clues rather than proof because of overlap with non-nutritional causes. Pushpa Gnanaraj, senior consultant in dermatology at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, explained that pallor linked to anaemia may show in the skin, lips, gums or inner eyelids due to reduced haemoglobin, but dullness and dark circles are not specific to low iron. Vinitha Krishnan, chief clinical dietitian at SIMS Hospital in Chennai, added that iron changes are subtle and similar features can arise from poor sleep, stress, dehydration, allergies, ageing, or thyroid disorders. Reshma Aleem, senior clinical dietician at Rela Hospital in Chennai, stated that recovery speed depends on the severity of the deficiency and treatment effectiveness.

Context

Proper clinical testing and a full medical history are necessary to identify the root cause of symptoms rather than relying on online checklists. Addressing presumed deficiencies without proper guidance can delay the diagnosis of actual health conditions and lead to adverse effects from excess vitamin intake.
