UPDATE - follow-up to TVK MLA's 'horse trading' claim: Case registered against former Madurai Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan: Police picked up former Madurai Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan from his home at Arappalayam in the early hours of Friday for questioning.

The Case

Authorities took him to the Central Crime Branch office in Madurai for inquiry regarding a bribery allegation. Madurai Central TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa lodged a complaint claiming someone tried to bribe him with ₹30 crore to vote against the TVK government during a no-confidence motion. Following this complaint, police registered a case against Mr. Mannan under the Prevention of Corruption Act and for criminal conspiracy.

Background

Mr. Mannan previously served as Madurai Deputy Mayor from 2006 to 2011 as a DMK candidate and supported M.K. Alagiri before joining the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.

Context

Local police often investigate bribery and corruption complaints by registering cases under specific anti-corruption laws to question suspects. Political defections and disputes during floor tests frequently spark legal battles in state politics.
