Opposition figures including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spent hours protesting near the Election Commission office in New Delhi before police took them into custody late Tuesday night. The protest erupted as a march toward the poll body headquarters was blocked near Parliament Street, forcing participants to climb barricades and enter the Akashvani Bhavan area.

Demands and Key Figures

Lawmakers from the INDIA bloc took part in the agitation to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The turnout included Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress figures Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien, and John Brittas of the CPI(M). BJD parliamentarians also joined the demonstration, while DMK and AAP representatives chose not to participate. Inside the AIR premises, the Gandhi siblings were joined by Congress politicians such as Deepender Hooda, Charanjit Singh Channi, Praniti Shinde, K C Venugopal, and Pawan Khera. Rahul Gandhi stated his intent was simply to meet the CEC to address vote manipulation concerns. The agitation stemmed from recent media reports that fellow Election Commissioners logged written objections fourteen times over ten months against actions taken by the CEC.

Context

Major political disagreements in India frequently spill onto the streets as parties use public demonstrations to pressure government bodies and constitutional offices on policy or administrative grievances. Such protests involve heavy police deployment, barricading of key central Delhi zones, and subsequent detentions of high-profile leaders before their eventual release later in the day.
