Dr Anshu Kabra, additional director of cardiology at Narayana Hospital, Jaipur, says that a typical morning cup of coffee or tea is generally safe for healthy adults if taken in moderation. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, a chemical that normally promotes sleepiness, which temporarily lifts alertness and can cause a brief rise in heart rate and blood pressure. How a person reacts depends on genetics, usual caffeine habit, age, medicines and any existing health problems. The American Heart Association’s latest statement notes that most adults can handle roughly 400 milligrams of caffeine a day without adverse effects, but the exact amount varies with the type of drink and serving size. Regular moderate intake has been linked in observational studies to lower chances of coronary artery disease, stroke and heart failure, though it is not a cure. Warning signs such as fast heartbeat, palpitations, anxiety, sleep trouble or a noticeable jump in blood pressure suggest one should cut back. People with uncontrolled hypertension or heart rhythm disorders are advised to be especially careful. Dr Kubera adds that preparation matters: large amounts of added sugar, flavored syrups or high‑calorie creamers turn a modest beverage into a less heart‑friendly habit. Monitoring personal response and adjusting intake remains the best guide. ## Context Caffeine is a widely used stimulant, but its impact varies widely among individuals, making personalized limits more reliable than a one‑size‑fits‑all rule.
