India Car Sales Cross 5 Lakh in October Even With Annual Drop
Reported by Vivek Joshi (Copy Editor) · Rushlane ·
India recorded 5,07,768 passenger vehicle retail sales in October 2026, marking a 14.23 percent drop compared to 5,92,032 units sold in October 2025. Despite the year-on-year decline, monthly sales rose 18.86 percent compared to 4,27,213 units in September 2026, delivering the third-highest October retail total in history.
Festivities and Fuel Trends
The annual drop stems from a shift in the festive calendar, as Dhanteras and Diwali fall in November this year, pushing major vehicle purchases into the next month. Cumulative sales from April to October 2026 reached 30,68,353 units, showing a 16.14 percent increase over the 26,35,837 units sold during the same period last year. Petrol and ethanol cars led fuel choices with a 41.60 percent share, followed by CNG and LPG at 24.59 percent, diesel at 16.57 percent, hybrids at 9.94 percent, and electric vehicles at 7.38 percent. Urban demand grew by 20.10 percent and rural demand rose by 16.90 percent.
Brand Performance
Maruti Suzuki led the market with 2,11,996 units and a 41.75 percent share. Tata Motors took second place with 73,449 units, beating Mahindra, which sold 64,982 units. Tata held an 8,467-unit lead over Mahindra, with both brands taking 14.47 percent and 12.80 percent shares respectively. Hyundai sold 58,099 units, down from 69,458 units a year ago. Kia India surpassed Toyota with 30,799 units, while Toyota dropped to 28,727 units. Volkswagen Skoda Group sold 9,150 units, JSW MG Motor reached 7,082 units, Honda fell to 5,455 units, Renault dipped to 3,505 units, Nissan grew to 3,273 units, and VinFast jumped to 2,517 units from 142 units. In luxury and other segments, BMW recorded 1,770 units, Mercedes-Benz sold 1,682 units, Force Motors reached 1,330 units, Stellantis dropped to 1,079 units, BYD rose to 737 units, and Jaguar Land Rover stood at 472 units.
Context
Automotive retail sales in India often fluctuate based on the timing of major Hindu festivals like Diwali and Dhanteras, which traditionally drive high consumer spending on big-ticket items. Tracking month-on-month growth alongside yearly numbers helps analysts separate seasonal calendar shifts from actual changes in consumer demand.
