IOA Chief P.T. Usha Files Code Violation Complaint Over Poll WhatsApp Message
Reported by Shreya Kapoor (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Indian Olympic Association president P.T. Usha has filed a formal complaint with the Electoral Officer against former archer Dola Banerjee. Usha claims Banerjee broke election rules by sending a WhatsApp message that asked for votes for four specific candidates ahead of the Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit elections.
Election Rules
The message in question asked voters to support the New Bharat Panel and listed the ballot serial numbers and roll numbers for four candidates. Usha pointed out that this broke Clause 1.9 of the Model Code of Conduct, which was issued on October 30, 2026. This rule bans any form of publicity through new media or social networks during the campaign. Her complaint also noted Clauses 1.2 and 1.3, which state that candidates must campaign fairly and treat others with respect.
Action Sought
Usha wants election authorities to look into how the message was made and shared, and to ask the people involved for an explanation. She has asked for strict action under election rules if a violation is proved, along with orders to keep the playing field fair for everyone. She attached a screenshot of the WhatsApp text and a copy of the code of conduct with her complaint, asking for quick action before voting opened.
Context
Sports bodies like the Indian Olympic Association use strict rules and codes of conduct to make sure internal elections are fair and free from outside or digital pressure. Rules against social media campaigning help stop candidates from using unfair digital advantages to reach voters just before polling day.
