Former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Atar Singh Bhadana was beaten to death following a mining lease dispute in Bharatpur district, according to reports from AajTak and ABP News. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when Bhadana was at his crusher plant. Between seventy and eighty people attacked the plant, assaulting Bhadana and his associate Gagan Sharma with sticks, stones, and bricks. According to Bhadana's wife, attackers also shot at them. ABP News reported that police failed to reach the location for a long time despite being informed. Both injured men were initially taken to a local hospital. Gagan Sharma was then shifted to Bharatpur city, while Bhadana was referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where he died during treatment.
Background
Bhadana originally belonged to Haryana and previously served as the state president of the BJP Kisan मोर्चा. A dispute had been ongoing for days between the former MLA and local villagers regarding a path for the crusher and mining operations, with villagers staging a protest that Bhadana had earlier helped clear. The situation escalated on Sunday when Bhadana visited the plant personally along with his wife and other supporters.
Reactions
The killing has sparked political reactions in Rajasthan, especially since the incident took place in Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma's home district. Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition Tikaram जूली criticized the state government over the law and order situation. They stated that if a former ruling party MLA is unsafe and police fail to help, the safety of ordinary citizens is in serious doubt.
Context
Mining leases and local land access often spark friction between commercial operators and rural communities in parts of India. Political leaders frequently face heightened security scrutiny, making attacks on public figures particularly notable for state administrations.
