Commercial vehicle retail sales in India rose to 1,03,557 units in September 2026, a 37.62% increase over the same month last year. The tally is 28,311 units higher than September 2025 and 14.09% above August’s 90,769 units.

Overall Sales

The surge pushed the sector’s monthly growth to its strongest level in recent years. Diesel trucks still dominate, accounting for 80.76% of all sales, while CNG/LPG models held 12.07%. Petrol/ethanol vehicles fell to 3.11% and electric commercial vehicles grew to 4.04%, up from 2.16% a year earlier but down from August’s 5.18%.

Manufacturer Performance

Tata remained the clear leader with 35,931 units, up 46.96% YoY and representing 34.70% of the market. Mahindra followed with 27,677 units, a 25.84% rise and 26.73% share. Ashok Leyland sold 19,223 units, 36.33% higher YoY and 18.56% of total sales. VECV posted 8,309 units, up 25.70% and 8.02% share. Maruti Suzuki recorded 4,352 units, 29.02% growth and 4.20% share. Force Motors delivered 2,301 units, a 37.05% increase and 2.22% share. Daimler posted the strongest percentage gain, 62.52% to 2,077 units, giving it 2.01% of the market. SML Mahindra sold 1,286 units, up 39.18%. Other manufacturers together supplied 2,401 units, far above the 839 units a year earlier.

Context

The top four makers added 12,969 units, more than the sector’s net monthly gain, while smaller players saw mixed results. The rise in electric‑vehicle share signals a slow shift from diesel dominance, even as diesel still makes up four‑fifths of sales.
