Alfa Romeo Prepares 2028 Stelvio Update With Plug-In Hybrid Option and New Platform

Alfa Romeo is readying a major update for its Stelvio luxury SUV for the 2028 model year, bringing fresh exterior styling and a plug-in hybrid option to the lineup. The upcoming vehicle will sit on the new STLA Large platform created by parent company Stellantis. This same architectural foundation will support several other future releases from brands like Maserati, Chrysler, and Dodge.
Powertrain Details
While official specifications remain under wraps until a scheduled reveal later in the year, the Stelvio is expected to share engine choices with its corporate platform siblings. A gas-electric hybrid setup using a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six engine stands out as a strong possibility for the refreshed utility vehicle. Non-hybrid versions of that same engine push out 420 horsepower in standard form and reach 550 horsepower in high-output tune, meaning total output could climb even higher once electric motors and a battery pack enter the mix. Because the underlying hardware is designed to handle fully electric setups, a battery-powered variant may also join the range at a later date.
Context
Automakers frequently update their core vehicle lineups every few years to keep pace with changing buyer preferences and tougher environmental rules. Shifting toward shared vehicle platforms allows large manufacturing groups like Stellantis to cut development costs while building multiple different models from a single set of engineering blueprints.
