Porsche has unveiled the Mission S concept, a mid‑engine sports car that will sit above the 911 and enter regular production, marking the first permanent model in that segment since the 918 Spyder. The car was revealed in New York as part of Porsche’s ‘Sportwagenschmiede ‘35’ strategy, signaling a shift back to combustion power after the electric Mission X concept was cancelled. New design chief Tobias Sühlmann, who replaced Michael Mauer in February, oversaw the styling that draws on the late‑1990s Carrera GT, the 911 GT1 and the 959 roofline, with torpedo front lights, a large roof‑edge intake and a rear diffuser reminiscent of the 911 GT1. Sühlmann said the design was created in eight months after Michael Leiters called him with the idea. The underlying platform will accept pure‑petrol and hybrid drivetrains but cannot house an all‑electric system, underscoring Porsche’s renewed focus on combustion models. Production is expected to be a series‑run model built alongside the 911 at Zuffenhausen, though limited‑edition variants may follow.

Context

The Mission S follows Porsche’s long‑standing plan for a flagship model above the 911, a niche previously filled only by the limited‑run 918 Spyder, and reflects the brand’s broader move to blend classic design cues with modern performance while keeping electric options limited in this segment.
