Extreme yoga poses like headstands can hurt the spine if tried without years of proper training, according to an orthopaedic expert.
Yoga And Pilates Risks
Dr Arjun Dhawale, an additional director of orthopaedic spine surgery with over 20 years of experience at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, discussed spinal health risks on World Spine Day. While yoga helps overall body function, breathing, heart health, and muscle groups, extreme poses involving neck and back bending or twisting can cause pain for beginners. Complex moves like headstands should only be done by people who have trained for years to avoid injuries. Meanwhile, Pilates helps activate the core, build muscle mass, and strengthen the back, stomach, and limb muscles.
Safety And Training
Dr Arjun stated that every person has different limits for strength and flexibility training. He advised that workouts must be adjusted and done under a trainer's guidance. People must check and share any existing health problems with their trainer so workouts can be changed safely. General flexibility exercises are recommended, but extreme versions should be avoided to prevent injuries.
Context
World Spine Day is marked every year on October 16 to raise awareness about back pain, disability, and spinal health around the world. Spinal conditions remain a major cause of disability globally, leading to lower productivity and health costs. This observance brings together healthcare providers, communities, and policymakers to help prevent spine problems.
