Being slim does not mean your cholesterol levels are healthy. People with a lower body weight can still have high levels of LDL, which is known as bad cholesterol. Dr Punya Pratap Kujur, a consultant cardiologist at Gleneagles Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, explains that cholesterol depends on more than just weight.

Causes

Genetics play a big role through a condition called familial hypercholesterolemia. This can cause very high LDL cholesterol even in people who are thin and healthy. Food choices also affect cholesterol. Eating foods high in saturated fat like butter, ghee, fatty meat, and processed foods can raise LDL levels. A lack of physical activity and long hours of sitting can also harm your blood lipid levels.

Medical Factors

Certain medical conditions contribute to high cholesterol. Diabetes can affect blood lipid levels, and an underactive thyroid can raise LDL cholesterol. Smoking damages blood vessels and lowers good HDL cholesterol. Drinking too much alcohol can raise triglyceride levels. Hormonal changes during menopause can also cause LDL cholesterol to rise and HDL to fall.

Detection And Management

High cholesterol rarely causes noticeable symptoms. It is usually found through a blood test called a lipid profile. Some people with inherited conditions develop fatty deposits around their eyes or tendons. Research in the American Journal Of Epidemiology shows that people with familial hypercholesterolemia face a much higher risk of coronary heart disease. Doctors recommend everyday habits that support heart health and may prescribe medication if lifestyle changes are not enough.

Context

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your body that needs to be balanced for good health. Regular blood tests are important because high cholesterol has no outward signs. Doctors use lipid profiles to check these levels and guide health decisions.
