16-year-old John Griffin Jr. III was killed by a bystander after he opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three students and a teacher. The shooter used a shotgun that his mother had bought. Police said he entered the building by firing at the locked doors. Chief Mike Krantz said the victims who died were a five‑year‑old named Rhoam Summer, an eight‑year‑old and an eleven‑year‑old student. A seven‑year‑old child and a 54‑year‑old teacher were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The bystander who stopped the gunman has not been named. Officers arrived within minutes of the 911 calls and found the shooter’s body and the injured inside. Investigators are now reviewing the teen’s computer, phone, social media and search history to see if he was obsessed with past mass shootings or other violent content. No motive has been released and police have not said whether the boy had any ties to the school. The incident has shocked the Bend community, and a fundraiser has been set up for the family of the five‑year‑old victim.
