Two wounded survivors of a deadly shooting at an Oregon elementary school remain hospitalized while their community mourns four victims killed in the attack. The attack occurred Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, when 16-year-old former student Griffin J. John II entered a special needs classroom with a shotgun and began firing.
Survivors and Victims
The youngest shooting survivor is 7-year-old Saylor Graham, a sparrow club member with a genetic disorder who usually uses a wheelchair and is non-verbal. Matt Sampson, executive director of Sparrow Clubs, described her as a vibrant fighter whose story inspired other children. She was taken to a hospital in Portland and a Go-Fund-Me page for her family has raised nearly $400,000. Teacher Becky Drury, 54, is recovering in a Bend hospital with arm and hand wounds and hopes to go home soon, according to family spokesperson Zack Hall. Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert were killed in the incident. Lambert also coached volleyball and was remembered by Central Oregon Volleyball Club director Heidi Wood for refusing pay in her first year so the funds could support player scholarships.
Intervention and Community Response
A teacher and the father of two students stopped the gunman during the rampage. A teacher grappled with John for the weapon before the father entered and shot him to death, preventing further deaths. Distraught parents and teachers gathered outside the school Saturday to leave flowers, pray, and mourn. Police are still investigating the shooter's motive, while local families try to cope with the tragedy.
Context
School shootings remain a major public safety concern in communities across the United States. Local schools and volunteer groups often rally around affected families through memorials and fundraising campaigns to help them recover from sudden violence.
