Thirteen devotees died and 40 others sustained injuries after an out-of-control truck plowed into a crowd of pilgrims near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Sunday, October 18.

Incident Details

Gwalior Senior Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Singh stated that the paddy-loaded truck was coming from the Chhinor direction and approached a steep slope where heavy traffic is restricted. At around 1:30 AM, the vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint. It then broke through police barricades, lost control, sped down the slope, and crashed into the outer wall and gate of the temple where pilgrims had gathered in large numbers.

Casualties and Treatment

According to SSP Singh, 39 people were initially rushed to the hospital following the crash. Among the injured, five or six patients suffered critical fractures, while the rest sustained minor injuries and received ongoing medical care. Two police personnel on duty at the accident site were also injured and are currently undergoing treatment.

Context

Steep slopes and hilly stretches often pose severe safety hazards when heavy vehicles lose their brakes or control, especially in areas with unexpected late-night pedestrian gatherings. Heavy vehicle restrictions exist precisely to prevent such accidents, though enforcement challenges remain common on rural and semi-urban routes across the country.
