Thirteen devotees were killed and about forty injured when a paddy‑laden truck lost control on Sheetlamata Mandir road in Gwalior early Sunday. The vehicle, travelling around 1.30 am, struck people standing and sitting near the temple and then slammed into a wall. Police said the driver could not steer the heavy load and the crash sent the truck careening into the crowd. Superintendent of Police Dharamvir Yadav told PTI that four to five of the injured are in serious condition. Emergency services rushed the victims to nearby hospitals. The accident happened on the road that leads to the Sheetlamata Mandir, a popular pilgrimage site that draws large crowds at night. Authorities have opened an inquiry into the cause of the loss of control and have ordered a check on the safety of trucks carrying grain in the area.
Context
Truck accidents involving overloaded grain vehicles are a common safety issue in many Indian states. Overloading can make a vehicle unstable, especially on narrow rural roads at night. The incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of load limits and better crowd management near busy temples.
