US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met in Mumbai on Tuesday to discuss deepening energy, trade, and defence ties. Rubio stated that both nations are very close to finalising a bilateral trade agreement, with only a small number of items left to resolve. During their talks, Rubio urged India to increase purchases of American technology systems and expand energy trade, aligning with the US goal of reaching a five hundred billion dollar trade target by 2030.

Discussions

The discussions covered regional developments, civil nuclear cooperation, and supply chain diversification. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that both sides reviewed the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and advanced commerce frameworks. Following their bilateral meeting, Jaishankar and Rubio held a trilateral discussion with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan focusing on energy security and connectivity. Rubio also visited the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to pay tribute at the twenty-six eleven memorial and attended a reception hosted by the US Ambassador.

Context

Trade negotiations between large economies often involve complex talks over tariffs, market access, and energy sourcing. The ongoing discussions come as both nations seek to balance bilateral economic goals with their respective domestic energy needs and foreign policy priorities.
