US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is touring the Reliance Industries-owned Jamnagar Refinery in Gujarat on Wednesday to discuss global energy security. Washington hopes to talk with Reliance about refining extra Venezuelan crude to bring more oil to a market shaken by the Iran conflict. This massive plant is India's biggest refinery, holding an installed capacity of 1.4 million barrels every single day. Rubio is currently on a two-day trip to the nation, travelling alongside a large group of business leaders in what marks his second visit in under five months.
Talks in Mumbai
On October 20, the opening day of his journey, Rubio sat down with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai. The pair evaluated their countries' joint partnership, placing heavy emphasis on energy and defence. Jaishankar shared on social media that their dialogue covered expanding connections across trade, energy, technology, defence, and person-to-person bonds, alongside talks on regional affairs. A statement from the US State Department noted that Rubio pressed India to buy more American energy, technology, and military and nuclear gear. He argued that energy trade with the US can help diversify supply chains while satisfying heavy local consumer demand.
Context
Major economies frequently engage in high-level diplomatic visits and industrial tours to secure critical supply chains during times of international tension. Energy trade and defence partnerships form core pillars of the diplomatic ties connecting Washington and New Delhi.
