India and the United States are close to finalising a bilateral trade agreement, with only a small number of items left to resolve. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during his second visit to India in under five months.

Trade and Energy Talks

Mr. Rubio described India as a crude oil refining superpower and urged New Delhi to increase energy trade and purchase more American technology and defence systems. He also advocated for processing more Venezuelan crude in India and is scheduled to visit the Reliance Industries-owned Jamnagar Refinery on Wednesday. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that both sides welcomed progress on the trade pact and discussed regional issues, including developments in West Asia.

Context

High-level diplomatic visits between New Delhi and Washington regularly address trade agreements, energy security, and defence ties to expand bilateral cooperation. Energy supply diversification remains a key strategic priority for growing economies aiming to secure stable resource imports from multiple global partners.
