Renault has officially launched the Duster hybrid in India, positioning it as the ideal successor to its older diesel models. Stephane Deblaise, CEO of Renault Group India, stated that hybrids serve as the perfect replacement for diesel engines. The first-generation Duster heavily relied on its 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine, which powered nearly 90 percent of the nearly 200,000 units sold before it was discontinued in 2020 due to stricter BS6 emission rules.
Performance and Pricing
The new Duster hybrid delivers an ARAI-rated mileage of 29kpl, which outpaces the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder by 1.03kpl, while standing just 0.35kpl ahead of the Victoris. It produces a combined output of 160hp and 172Nm, giving it an advantage over its Maruti and Toyota competitors. The vehicle also features a 1.4kWh battery pack, which Renault notes allows up to 80 percent of city driving to run on pure electric power. Pricing ranges from Rs 16.99 lakh to Rs 19.49 lakh ex-showroom, with introductory rates tied to deliveries taking place before the end of 2026. At present, both the engine and battery are imported from Spain.
Market Plans
Francisco Hidalgo Marques, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Renault India, noted that petrol sales have dipped recently as buyers choose to wait for the hybrid version. The company is actively working to localise production to reduce costs and increase output. Segment growth is also expected to rise as competitors like the Kia Seltos and the next-generation Hyundai Creta introduce their own hybrid options.
Context
Hybrid vehicles combine a traditional fuel engine with an electric motor and battery to improve fuel efficiency without requiring an external charging plug. The mid-size SUV segment in India has seen growing competition as automakers adapt to changing emission standards and shifting consumer preferences toward fuel-saving technologies.
