Indian IT stocks saw strong buying on Wednesday, October 21, led by L&T Technology Services after the company reported robust second-quarter results. A bullish outlook from global brokerage house Jefferies also helped improve market sentiment.

Market Gains

The Nifty IT index climbed up to 2.6 percent to reach an intraday high of 32,348.25. This performance outperformed the benchmark Nifty 50, which gained around 1 percent. All IT stocks traded in positive territory during the session. L&T Technology Services surged as much as 15 percent, while Wipro advanced 4 percent. Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies and Mphasis gained between 2 percent and 3.5 percent. Persistent Systems, LTIMindtree and Coforge rose more than 1 percent each.

Earnings And Outlook

A strong start to the second-quarter earnings season improved sentiment, as companies reported better-than-expected results and signs of business stabilisation. TCS and HCL Technologies also posted earnings above expectations. Meanwhile, renewed interest in traditional technology spending, supported by Accenture's guidance for the next financial year, encouraged investors to buy quality IT shares.

Brokerage Views And Risks

Jefferies believes Indian IT stocks could see a valuation re-rating if earnings resilience challenges pessimistic long-term growth assumptions. The brokerage identified Infosys and Sagility as offering the most attractive risk-reward opportunities, and highlighted Infosys and TCS as the only large-cap IT stocks with potential for a re-rating. Jefferies raised its target price for Infosys to ₹1,160 and for TCS to ₹2,125, while raising target prices across large-cap IT firms by 14 to 18 percent. However, the recovery remains vulnerable to external pressures such as elevated crude oil prices, high US bond yields, foreign investor outflows, and uncertainty over AI-driven changes in client spending.

Context

Technology sector share prices often react quickly to quarterly earnings reports and major global brokerage notes because investors constantly adjust their growth expectations. Broader macroeconomic factors like US bond yields and crude oil prices frequently influence foreign institutional investments in Indian equities.
