Indian share markets opened sharply higher on Wednesday, pushed up by hopes of a potential trade agreement between India and the United States, alongside strong second-quarter earnings, rupee appreciation, and attractive largecap valuations noted by the Economic Times. The BSE Sensex surged 829 points, or 1.1%, to reach an intraday high of 74,682.19 after beginning trading at 74,337.93 from a previous close of 73,852.90. The Nifty 50 climbed 232 points, or 1%, to 23,120.90, opening at 23,016 compared to its earlier close of 22,888.95.

Sector Performance

Information technology shares led the gains across sectors. The Nifty IT index advanced 2.03%, while the Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Metal indices grew by 0.74% and 0.70% respectively. The Nifty Media index dropped 0.15% as the only major laggard. Infosys led the Nifty 50 gainers with a 2.47% rise, followed by Tata Consultancy Services up 2.08%, and UltraTech Cement rising 1.96%. Conversely, Bajaj Finance fell 2.32% to become the biggest loser on the benchmark, while Bajaj Finserv slipped 0.49%.

Market Catalysts

Investors also tracked the Jio Platforms initial public offering, which opened for subscription on Wednesday. Meanwhile, rising crude oil prices and elevated US bond yields remained key risks that analysts warn could limit further market gains and keep future movements stock-specific.

Context

Stock market benchmarks regularly react to global economic indicators, currency shifts, and corporate earnings reports. Major indices like the Sensex and Nifty reflect the overall health and daily trading sentiment of top publicly listed companies in the country.
