UPDATE - follow-up to Tamil Nadu rains LIVE: Schools declare holiday in Chennai, four other districts: Heavy downpours continue to lash Tamil Nadu, keeping schools closed in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts on Wednesday.
Rain Data And Waterlogging
Weather stations at Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam recorded 12 cm and 11 cm of rainfall respectively by Wednesday morning. Taramani logged 10 cm, Madhavaram recorded 9 cm, while Villivakkam and Nandanam both registered 8 cm. Visuals from Hindustan Times showed flooded roads in T. Nagar areas like Bazullah Road and Usman Road. Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N. Anand inspected the waterlogged areas in his T. Nagar Assembly constituency and asked officials to use motor pumps to drain the water quickly, noting that ongoing Metro Rail work contributed to the stagnation. In Coimbatore, a tree fell across D.B. Road in R.S. Puram, nearly hitting pedestrians and motorists.
Official Response And Forecast
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will chair a meeting at the Secretariat with Ministers and officials to review readiness for the Northeast monsoon. A fresh low-pressure system forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to keep intense rain falling across the state until October 26, with southern and delta districts likely to get the heaviest downpours. The Regional Meteorological Centre issued orange alerts for southern districts like Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, where up to 20 cm of rain is expected. A nowcast warned of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across 24 districts alongside Puducherry and Karaikal until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, bringing risks of slippery roads and traffic jams.
Context
The Northeast monsoon is a crucial annual weather pattern that brings the bulk of the year's rainfall to India's southern peninsula, particularly Tamil Nadu, between October and December. While this seasonal moisture is vital for local water resources and agriculture, heavy downpours frequently overwhelm urban drainage systems in growing cities like Chennai. Weather agencies track developing marine pressure systems closely during these months to issue timely alerts for districts prone to flooding.
