What Happened
The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday approved an additional ₹71.01 crore to raise the contingency cash available to every police station in the state. The order, released on Oct 21, 2026, was signed by the chief minister’s office. The increase is meant to cover routine administrative costs, unforeseen expenses and curb misuse of funds.
Details
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay first announced the boost while presenting the Home Department’s 2026‑27 grant demands in the Legislative Assembly. Police stations are grouped into Light, Medium and Heavy categories based on the number of crimes they record each month. An official order later that day put the money into three tiers. Light‑category stations will see their monthly fund rise from ₹3,750 to ₹30,000. Medium stations go from ₹6,000 to ₹40,000, and heavy stations from ₹8,250 to ₹50,000. The government says the larger pool will help stations handle unexpected needs without resorting to illegal financing.
Context
Contingency funds are a small part of each station’s budget and are used for day‑to‑day items such as stationery, vehicle fuel and minor repairs. Raising these limits is a common step when states anticipate higher operational pressure or want to tighten financial oversight.
